Myst! Just played it again with my 7 year old son.
Components: There's about 6 worlds, 1 world is the hub, and others are off it like spokes. Within each world, there are also components – different parts of puzzles, that have to be found and identified.
Help: Not much help is provided, to be honest, and that's what's fun. Once you know the puzzle, suddenly you see that the help was there all along, but you just didn't notice.
Rules: Well, there are places you can go, and places you can't. The rules are simply what you CAN do, and what you CAN'T. They are implicit in the game.
Assumptions: Interesting playing a modern version with my son, in which the first person player can walk around, instead of 'clicking' from screen to screen. The assumptions in the earlier version (see 'rules' above) are therefore not as clear.
