Unit 2 – differences between cyber security, cyber awareness and cyber safety

Where cyber awareness is an understanding of the various threats involved in different online and offline activities and how to mitigate them, cyber safety is the act of using this information to keep yourself and your data safe by practicing cyber safety (eg. by not posting private information). Cyber security refers to the physical measures in place to protect ones data such as passwords, firewalls etc.

While I haven’t implicitly taught any of these topics in schools (only as examples for discussing other topics when they relate) I believe cyber safety, and by extension cyber awareness are the main areas that should be taught with cyber security becoming more prevalent in the later years of schooling (given that the data protection required by most high schoolers would not exceed that which is provided generally by any home or school computer eg. passwords and basic firewalls.
